CORE COMPETENCE ANALYSIS

|Introduction

A 'Core Competence', enables a business to deliver a differentiated outcome / solution. In other words it offers a value proposition that typically cannot easily be copied. This in turn protects and embellishes the company brand and enables a perceived position to be understood and verified in the mind of the Customer. A competitive advantage can be delivered in many forms, but it must be part of an overall plan, a well thought through strategy followed by tactical action.

To manage a 'Competitive Advantage', ultimately means the careful management of 'Human Resources'. By definition it is of high level strategic importance and should be managed accordingly and must not be left to chance. Getting the 'right' resource working efficiently and effectively across the organisation is itself a critical success factor and requires coordinated action.

The skills and talents of the individuals within the organisation must align with the strategy going forward (in the short, medium and long term).

As implied above, this is a key subject area but surprisingly often gets little or no attention. Make it a priority and manage strategic HR requirements as part of individual Product / Services programme plans.

The Management of Core Competencies

Competencies by definition are a collective of directed and managed Capabilities. Competencies can be associated with technology, distribution, logistics, purchasing, service etc. and/or a specific combination thereof. Product Manager's, Market Development Manager's and Strategic Directors are therefore directly responsible for the management these requirements. Rather like the conductor of the orchestra.
